SCOUTS are thrilled that people have voted in record numbers to award them a share of £50,000 to improve facilities and attract new members.
The 6th Eastcote Scout Group will get £20,000 from the prize fund to make improvements to their scout hut in Oak Grove, Eastcote.
Group scout leader Martin Stanworth said: “We are incredibly grateful to receive the award and it will be very valuable to us.
“We are trying to provide fun, adventure and excitement to children every week and it’s difficult to do this in an urban environment, so now we can improve the grounds and the headquarters so that we will be able to provide more excitement and fun to more children in Eastcote.
“Everyone is extremely pleased.”
District commissioner for the Ruislip, Eastcote and Northwood Scouts, Leo Mindel, said: “The 6th Eastcote group in particular are very much involved in the local community, and will be able to use that money to improve facilities and continue to reach out to local people.”
The scouts share the winnings with a project to improve the play area in Harefield Village Green, which will get the remaining £30,000.
Thousands of people voted online and in libraries in the People’s Choice award, as part of Hillingdon Council’s Feel PROUD campaign, to realise their favourite community project out of a shortlist of five.
The Eastcote and Harefield projects received more than 90 per cent of the 4,900 votes cast, the most the council says it has ever received.
Voting for community projects in areas in the south of the borough, to also get a share of a £50,000 prize fund, closed at midnight yesterday (Tuesday).
The winners will be announced at a public meeting in Committee Room 6 at the Civic Centre, Uxbridge tomorrow, starting at 7pm.
