Anna-Mariya Angelinova is headed Stateside, part of an exclusive group of talented pupils from the UK getting a taste of US college life.

She  is the sole Harlington School representative among 175 Brits on a programme for pupils from low and middle income backgrounds. More than 2,000 pupils applied.

She will spend a week in Boston this summer, at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to see if American college life is for her. She will also visit the ‘Ivy League’ schools of Yale and Harvard.

The programme is run by education foundation the Sutton Trust and administered by the Fulbright Commission, which has been promoting UK-US educational links for decades.

Anna-Mariya said: “I am incredibly excited to be flying out to Boston to spend the week in MIT, Yale and Harvard. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity which hasn’t quite sunk in yet.

“The honour of being chosen to be part of the programme from such a huge applicant pool is surreal.”

To get the spot, she had to make a video presentation and perform well on a selection course in April.

Harlington’s head of sixth form, Charles Jefferies, said: “It is a fantastic opportunity for Anna-Mariya. I am sure she will enjoy the experience of discovering what life in an overseas university has to offer.”

School prom season is nearly here!
