The petition signed by more than 4,000 neighbours to stop a caravan site has been called 'lie and a misrepresentation' by the applicant.

Yesterday concerned residents handed in the petition to Harrow Council, calling for the authority to block the building of a caravan site in Broadfields Country Club in Headstone Lane, Harrow.

However Richard Gabriel, the chairman of the applicant group Harrow Community Sports, said he was worried petitioners had been wrongly claiming the caravan park would be a gipsy site in order to scare neighbours into signing the petition.

He said: “Their petition has very little or no value at all because it is all based on a lie and a misrepresentation of what we are trying to do.

“What we are looking to do is bring something to the area which London, as a capital city, is seriously lacking.

“From the very first day we have tried to befriend them [the campaigners] but they have been completely against us.

“I am willing to sit down with them and talk about their concerns.”

The application is due to be considered by Harrow Council's planning committee next month.
