FULHAM'S North End Road is to lose its second big name shop within weeks.

Soon after Costa closed, Sainsbury’s has decided not to renew the lease on the Local branch in Fulham when it runs out later this year. It said staff will be moved to other branches in the area.

A spokesman for the supermarket said: “We have decided to consolidate our offer in the local area to ensure more efficient trading operations and will be closing our North End Road store when the existing lease comes to an end in October.

"We have informed colleagues and every employee will be relocating to a nearby store and remaining with Sainsbury's. We would like to reassure customers that we will be maintaining our highest standards of choice and service from our other nearby stores, which are just as easily accessible on foot."

Costa shut its doors after a ‘review of its portfolio’. The closures coincide with the opening of a second budget store in the road, Poundland.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council’s business champion, Councilor Robert Iggulden, said the long-term future of the area is bright, with the planned regeneration of Earls Court and surrounding areas.

He added: "In the short term, at the southern end of North End Road, a new food market has opened on Fridays and Saturdays which is proving to be very popular."
