Work to improve safety at the Jolly Waggoners Roundabout in Cranford is set to begin in February next year.

Transport chiefs plan to install screens at the junction of the A4 and A312, which they hope will encourage drivers to slow down by reducing visibility.

Bosses at Transport for London (TfL) also plan to alter the road markings in an effort to reduce collisions at the accident hotspot, where residents have said there are four crashes on an average day.

Smartening up the subway and creating a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists there and on surrounding pavements are among the other changes being made.

The work is being carried out after a three-week consultation in July, to which there were 29 responses.

Fewer than half (46 per cent) of respondents supported plans to obstruct motorists' view, which they feared could increase the risk of accidents.

But TfL said similar screens elsewhere had reduced collisions by about 30 per cent by encouraging more cautious driving.

Calls for traffic lights were rejected as TfL said this would increase queues. Calls for speed cameras were also dismissed as it said there had been too few serious speed-related crashes at the site to merit their introduction.

As for building an underpass or flyover at the busy roundabout, TfL said a major project like this was in its 10-year business plan but funding was not currently available.

TfL said it plans to write to residents and other stakeholders with details of construction work nearer the time.
