A book helping parents of young children learning to read has been written by two mums from Ruislip.

Friends Fran Tracey and Caroline Russell have used their combined love and knowledge of reading to write The New Reader’s Tool Kit. It aims to give support and help to parents so they can build on the work their child does at school.

Ms Tracey, a librarian by trade who worked for 15 years in Hillingdon libraries, said: “We both have young children, and Caroline’s are younger than mine. Things are different now to when parents were at school, less time is spent in the classroom listening to very young children read.

"We saw a gap in the market aimed at supporting and helping parents teach their kids read. The aim is to support the stuff that goes on in school."

The pair both have two children each, with Ms Tracey living in Crosier Way, and Mrs Russell in Herlwyn Avenue in Ruislip. Part of the book aims to take the jargon out of teaching kids to learn phonics.

Ms Tracey, 49, said: “It also looks to demystify the things that happen at school so parents can understand how their kids are taught. We hope to foster a life-long love of reading, and help the children become good and keen readers.”

To go with Ms Tracey’s passion for books is Mrs Russell’s educational expertise. She helps primary children that have fallen behind in their reading and brings them up to speed.

Ms Tracey said: “It has advice on what to do if their child gets stuck or frustrated, with do’s and don’ts and other tips."

The New Reader’s Toolkit is available to purchase now in the Amazon Kindle Store priced £4.99.

Their blog www.thenewreaderstoolkit.com has current news and book reviews. It is expected to be released in print format soon.
