CHILDREN from schools across the north of the borough came together for their first ever community games.

The event, organised by Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner MP Nick Hurd, a youth council for the area and the organisation SportInspired, was held at Harefield Academy in Northwood Way, on Friday last week.

Pupils from Mr Hurd’s constituency competed at taekwondo, table tennis, dance, hockey and athletics throughout the day.

Prizes were given out by Mr Hurd and the Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Michael Markham.

Mr Hurd, who took part himself, said: “This idea came from the board of young people who advise me. They said that there were not enough opportunities to mix with kids from other schools.

“So in Olympic year, the idea of a community games was born. We had children from almost every secondary school in the constituency mixed up in new teams.

“The whole day gave them a chance to make new friends and try new sports.

“The smiles got bigger during the day despite the rain. It was a big hit and we were all inspired to make it a regular event.”
