IN RESPONSE to Councillor Jenkins' letter of February 3 (Working hard to improve the lido) concerning the proposed works at Ruislip Lido, I disagree that the proposals, taken as a whole, are an improvement.

The effect of the proposals is a matter of opinion, and while improved toilet facilities and a new woodland centre are to be commended, the introduction of boating, swimming and the admission of vehicles is not.

My preference is that the lido should remain in its present form, primarily devoted to wildlife, and not proceed towards a multi-facility leisure centre.

In addition, I have concerns regarding the effect of some of the proposals on the wildlife within the lido and perhaps also on the surrounding woodland. Ruislip Woods is a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest, and Natural England should be informed and consulted.

A development such as this should be subject to an independent environmental impact assessment, to holistically embrace all aspects of the council proposals, not all of which are mentioned.

Allowing people in and on the water also raises the serious issue of water quality.

Many residents of the Reservoir Road area will have particular concerns regarding increased traffic, and will be doubtful that council promises will fully address parking violations and anti-social behaviour.

Proper consultation with public participation is required before this project is allowed to proceed.
