So Councillor Susan Hall thinks it is 'alarmist' of Harrow Hate Crime Forum to report that hate crime figures are up.

Yet the figures, presented by the forum's chair Arpita Dutt, have not been faulted - would Councillor Hall preferred the figures not to have come out at all?

Mrs Dutt pointed out that the rise in reported offences might be due to more people coming forward - surely a good thing - and not necessarily a rise in actual crime, but even so she was slated by the council and the police borough commander.

A few weeks ago the council encouraged people to use new reporting centres.

Will they want to see these statistics when they filter through, or will they too be dismissed as 'alarmist'?

The police and council surely agree it's better these victims don't just suffer in silence.

THIS week the Observer launches its annual Christmas Toy Appeal. Over the years readers have given generously to help sick children who will spend the yuletide season in hospital. And it really does make a difference to their lives.

This year is going to be more difficult because of the credit crunch but adding just one extra gift to your list will make a poorly child very happy.

For the past three years we have seen the pleasure a new toy can bring to a seriously ill child, especially when it is given to them by famous person they recognise.

We would like to thank Scouting For Girls for agreeing to hand out the presents and Harrow Council for letting us store the toys in its libraries. Now it is down to you the reader to give generously.
