A SMALL local group is celebrating after seeing off a proposed supersize housing development.

The Windmill Road Action Group (WRAG) has campaigned for years to see Invista Real Estate's plans to redevelop Reynard Mills in Windmill Road, Brentford, scrapped.

Antoinette McGovern, leader of the WRAG, said: "It is another victory for all those in the local community who felt strongly that the proposals were totally out of character with the area and would put enormous pressure on the existing infrastructure and resources. We are also grateful to our local councillors for their support in ensuring that planning permission was refused."

She added the suggested 275 flats were high density and high rise and not suited for the area.

Planning officials rejected the plans on April 17 because they said it would not improve the character and quality of the area.

At a meeting earlier on in the year Hounslow councillors admitted they had received hundreds of letters of complaints about the proposed site.

Ms McGovern added: "We anticipate the developers will return with further plans to redevelop the site in the near future. We would welcome a dialogue with any company that plans to build on the Reynard Mills site, to ensure that the end result reflects the needs and aspirations of the local area."

Brentford councillor Matt Harmer said: "This result is tribute to the hard work of the residents and I know many of them will be jumping for joy."
