Plans to transform a Pinner church's playing field into flats have been scrapped.
Independent planning inspector Charles Hoile ruled land belonging to St George's Parochial Church could not be used to create 12 houses and 15 flats.
St George's Playing Field, which sits behind St George's Church Hall, in Pinner View, has been at the centre of a dispute between residents and the church council.
MP for Harrow West Gareth Thomas (Labour), said: "I am very pleased that the views of local residents have been taken into consideration and a public open space has been protected."
The church council had hoped to gain permission for the properties at an appeal hearing after the council rejected the original plans in November 2007.
A 637-name petition was handed into the council in opposition to the scheme earlier this month.
