In November 1938, I was fortunate enough to be selected to represent the Harrow Elementary Schools Football team that participated in the English schools cup competition.
In the first round of the cup we were drawn away to play Stepney Schools, but due to the weather the game was cancelled, and rearranged to be played a week later, on what was then known as Headstone Lane School Ground, adjoining King George V Avenue.
We managed to win the game 6-0, and in the next round were drawn to face the redoubtable Edmonton Schools, again at Headstone Lane, and where for our pains we were soundly defeated 8-2. The Harrow team was drawn from those who attended elementary schools in the Harrow area, I myself being a pupil at Vaughan Road School, West Harrow. Of the team, I can only recall two players and they were Floyd (Potter Street) and Morgan (Belmont).
Most of the team, if still alive, will be like myself, in their 80s and at a later stage would have served in the war 1943-1945 and been 'demobbed' possibly in late 1947.
If anyone from the team is still alive, or any of their relatives, I would be delighted to hear from them, although regretfully I am not on the internet. I was the hapless goalkeeper on the team.
