John Gashion has I fear misinterpreted the Yorkshire phrase 'out for nowt' in his letter in the Gazette on October 17 on the need for local funding of the Crossrail project.

The true Yorkshire saying reads as follows:

See all, hear all, say nowt Eat all, sup all, say nowt And if tha ever does owt for nowt Do it for thissen A harsh doctrine indeed, I hasten to add that these sentiments do not apply to me personally, nor to most of my fellow Yorkshiremen, but as a long standing resident of Ealing I feel that they merit very careful consideration by our local workers in these cash strapped days.
