In what sounds like a bizarre version of paper, scissors, stone, a rocket-powered car is up against a giant ice cream and hundreds of kilt runners

The world's fastest model rocket-powered car, created by students at The Heathland School, is competing with four other new records in an online poll.

Guinness World Records has asked people to vote for their record of the week, with the winner going into a contest for record of the year.

Young engineers at the secondary school in Wellington Road South, Hounslow, more than doubled the existing mark for the fastest model rocket-powered car in June this year.

The winning team's car Mobius reached 205mph, obliterating the previous top speed of 88mph set two years earlier.

Now their record is up against four others set this year in a fans' choice vote. The other contenders are: most ice cream scoops balanced on a cone (85), largest kilt race (1,764), most tennis balls held in one hand (23) and largest game of tag (2,202 participants).

As this was written, it was a two-way race between Heathland students and tennis ball balancer Mahadeo Bhujbal, with the latter a net cord ahead.

Pupils at The Heathland School spent 18 months working with experts from the Bloodhound SSC team, who are attempting to break the (full-sized) land speed record.

Students are now constructing new cars in a bid to break their own record, the old models having shattered at the end of their two runs in June.

Jaswant Thandi, of the Bloodhound SSC team, said on Twitter: "Man holding tennis balls in India is more exciting than kids in UK building rocket cars. Sad! Make a difference (and) vote."
