Police closed the A40 this morning after reports of a girl threatening to jump from a footbridge above the A40 in Hillingdon.

The girl, believed to be in her mid-teens, was successfully rescued from the bridge and has been taken to hospital by ambulance.

She is not said to have incurred any physical injuries in the incident.

The A40 was closed by police in both directions just after 11am this morning.

London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service were on stand-by at the scene.

The latest from Transport for London's traffic Twitter account is that the A40 is closed between Swakeleys Roundabout and Hillingdon Circus.

Queues eastbound stretch back to M40 junction1A in Denham and westbound beyond the Polish War Memorial in Ruislip.

Update: The A40 is now open between Swakeleys Roundabout and Hillingdon Circus but traffic queues remain.
