It was a day of good old fashioned fun at RAF Northolt on Saturday, when around 8,000 people turned up at the air base.

Visitors were treated to a spectacular flypast at noon. It included two Spitfires and a Lancaster bomber from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight plus The Red Arrows aerobatic team, Typhoon and Tornado jet fighters, a Boeing C-17 transport aircraft and a selection of helicopters.

The same aircraft had flown over Buckingham Palace in tribute to the Queen following the Trooping the Colour ceremony in central London to mark her official birthday.

The public tickets for the station’s hugely popular open day sold out well in advance.

Aviation fans, history buffs and interested locals grabbed a chance to enter the base in West End Road, Ruislip and get up close to military aircraft.

Thousands of people were attracted to the event, with RAF personnel travelling from far and wide with their families for the fun day.
