THE Queen will visit Northwood this afternoon (May 6) to open one of the UK's top military buildings, whose staff are co-ordinating the efforts of British forces in Afghanistan.

The monarch, who is head of the armed forces, will tour the new home of the Permanent Joint Headquarters, together with the Duke of Edinburgh.

The military building, known as Northwood Headquarters , is responsible for planning and co-ordinating all overseas operations.

It is part of a complex which is undergoing a £150million redevelopment programme, due to be completed next year.

During the works, 42 buildings are being demolished, with 20 new ones being built and two more being refurbished.

An array of environmental and sustainable initiatives have also been installed during the development, including bat and bird boxes.

The visit is expected to take place at about 3pm today.
