Police in Brent targeted schoolchildren on their way home from school in a bid to crack down on young people carrying knives.

Two airport scanner-style 'knife arches' were set up outside Brent Town Hall in Forty Lane, Wembley, on Wednesday (04) and everyone travelling on 245 buses headed towards Kingsbury was ordered off the single-deckers.

Children as young as five then walked through the metal detectors in an operation lasting two hours from 2.30pm and 400 people were stopped, resulting in 71 individual searches.

Two men were arrested, one for possession of cannabis with intent to supply and the other for having what police have described as a 'controlled substance'.
