Students from the Oakland School in Isleworth were thrilled to spend a day exploring the River Thames with members of the Chiswick Pier Trust (CPT).

A group of 20 pupils with learning difficulties along with teachers explored the work of the trust, watched a lifeboat demonstration, went bird watching and fishing on the Thames.

The special school on Woodlands Road for secondary aged pupils also got to see a rescue crew in action.

Teacher Irina Toma, at Oaklands School, said: “It was a wonderful experience for our students.

"They all enjoyed the different multi-sensory activities: the life boat demonstration; the walk along the river; the bird watching and the fishing.

"A special thank you to The Thames Explorer Trust and Lorraine Conterio for organising this exciting water adventure for us.”

Lucinda MacPherson from the Chiswick Pier Trust said: “We were delighted that so many students from Oaklands and their teachers could come to Chiswick Pier on such a beautiful day and take their studies out of the classroom and onto the Pier to experience the Thames first hand.

"Oaklands have made water their special project this term, and we wanted to give the students the opportunity to get a real sense of the power and movement of the river by standing on the Pier’s pontoon, and feeling it move when the RNLI did their display.

"The RNLI got the most enthusiastic reception I have yet witnessed and the students fully engaged with the multi-sensory activities Lorraine organised for them."
