Cranes could move in to bulldoze the much-loved Sawyers Arms pub in Feltham as early as this weekend.

Feltham's oldest watering hole on Ashford Road is likely to be replaced by housing after the site was bought by A2Dominion Housing Group, who applied for the demolition of the building for anytime between March 1, 2014, and February 28, 2015.

Hounslow council's decision states the applicant does not require prior approval of the proposed demolition or of any proposed restoration of the site, giving A2Dominion the green light to move ahead with their plans.

The news may come as a surprise to many people in the community as there was hope the exterior structure would remain intact, while the inside is converted, rather than knocking the former pub down to rubble.

On Facebook the news stirred some interest with our followers who were disappointed about the decision to scrap the local landmark as well as growing concern over the rate at which pubs were closing down in the area.

Comments included; "Am sure people would like to have seen a bit of the old Feltham preserved, but the council seems hell bent on getting all the old reminders of Feltham out of the way," said Rita Barber.

Tina Bissett added: "Another old pub closed, at this rate we won't have any of the good old pubs left soon."

Natalie Wilson said: "Keep the building" and Grahame Cross added: "another pub to hit into rubble."

A2Dominion confirmed the time frame of the demolition but gave no set date.

A spokesman added: "Please note that this is a year-long window.

"As for what will be built on site, we are carrying out various feasibility options which we will present to the local authority when we formally commence the planning process."

At the end of last year, regular punters were joined by MP for Feltham and Heston Seema Malhotra in a fight to save the pub.

But there was some confusion about the sale after an initial letter claimed to be sent by Fuller's in November 2013, was only received by the publicans one month later in December, around a week before the sale was completed.

Any plan to save the site was therefore short-lived as a quick sale put an end to any hope of salvaging the landmark.

Fuller's sold the property to A2Dominion Group on December 9, 2013.
