A RUISLIP punk band has spent the week touring with US legends Bowling For Soup , after winning an online competition.
The five lads of We Sunk Atlantis beat more than 50 other bands in a vote to select a support act during the Americans' British tour.
Vocalist Antony Fleming, 20; bass player James Warren, 18; lead guitarist Jimmy Balch, 18; rhythm guitarist Lee Bundy, 19; and drummer
Dan Clark, 18, grew up in the Ruislip and Ickenham area. All bar Jimmy attended Queensmead School, in South Ruislip.
Before the first performance last week, bassist James told the Gazette: "We were absolutely amazed. Antony told us and we thought he was joking.
"It didn't quite sink in until Bowling For Soup were in the room next to us doing a soundcheck."
We Sunk Atlantis are not unused to big crowds, having played gigs at Camden's Electric Ballroom four times, three of which were sold out, but this week they will be playing their biggest gigs to date.
It is a remarkable achievement for a band, who only released their first EP in August last year.
James said: "Our PA got us into it through Twitter. She said Bowling For Soup really liked us and they said 'we were a really good laugh', so they put us through to the final nine and we won by 3,000 votes, which is amazing because the other bands were established and we've only been around nine months. It is unbelievable, we are still in shock."
Perhaps the secret to We Sunk Atlantis's success is the internet, which they have used to build a big fan base.
"Dan [drummer] makes YouTube videos and has got a big following there. We have used that to advertise ourselves and get people to download our video," said James.
"The internet is the best way - there's so much potential in it. We are on all the main sites like MySpace and Facebook, to advertise ourselves as much as possible."
The next step for the band is getting a record label.
