Members of the public will get a chance to have their say about plans for a long neglected playing fields near Feltham station.

Feltham Arenas, in Shakespeare Avenue, was where Mo Farah took his first steps to Olympic glory but it has fallen into disrepair in recent years.

Work on a new stadium for Feltham FC at the site was halted in 2012 after a council investigation found builders had dumped more than four times as much soil and building rubble there as planning permission allowed.

Hounslow Council last year agreed to spend £300,000 removing dumped materials from the 14-acre site and returning it to something approaching its former state, so it could be safely used by the public.

It now plans to hold a public consultation later this year on the land's long term future, a move which has been welcomed by Feltham and Heston MP Seema Malhotra.

"The passion of residents and politicians alike to move forward with a vision of a future leading edge sports facility that meets the needs of local families puts us on a firm footing for progress in 2014," said Ms Malhotra, who has long campaigned with residents for a sporting hub to be created at the site.

"It is vital that local families are fully engaged in the development of Feltham Arenas and that we hear from all parts of the community on this campaign. It is vital to maintain momentum."

The promised consultation, due to take place in mid-2014, follows a public meeting organised by Ms Malhotra in November last year to discuss what should be done with the land.

Richmond Volleyball club, which has hundreds of members, last year revealed it was looking at the site as a possible home.

It wants to build indoor and beach volleyball courts, and chairman David Rijvers last year told the Chronicle it was considering teaming up with cycling and gymnastics groups on a joint planning bid.
