A man is understood to have been talked down from a footbridge over the A316 in Twickenham last night after threatening to jump.

The road was closed in both directions at about 7pm, according to Transport for London, due to what it described as a 'police incident'.

One person described seeing police trying to talk a man down from the bridge, near Richmond College.

It is understood the person was successfully talked down without coming to any harm.

The road closure was reported on Twitter to be causing tailbacks to Twickenham Stadium, to the east, and Hospital Bridge roundabout, in Whitton, to the west.

The road reopened at about 9pm.

Last month Virgin Media and its contractor McNicholas were both fined for causing huge tailbacks on the A316 due to unfinished roadworks.
