UXBRIDGE'S main Post Office has had to close this afternoon (Thursday) due to a system failure that has affected branches nationally.

The Post Office in WH Smith, in High Street, Uxbridge, has been turning customers away for the past two hours because of the technical glitch, and an employee told the Gazette that Post Offices across the country have experienced the same problem.

The Post Office has issued an apology to customers for the onconvenience caused.

Spokesperson Valerie Antoine said: "We are doing everything we can to fix the problem as quickly as possible and restore a full service to all branches. Branches are making special cash payments to Post Office Card Account customers.

"Post Office ATMs and Post & Go services in branch are unaffected. Bill payments can be made at Paystation terminals in Post Office branches."
