AN AWARD- winning volunteer who shares his name with a football legend retires today as a police volunteer after six years of service.

Dixie Dean, 79, has enjoyed the role of volunteer at Ruislip Police Station, in The Oaks, Ruislip, since 2003.

Mr Dean, of Flamborough Drive, Ruislip, has since provided invaluable tips to new volunteers, and was even honoured two years ago by former deputy Commissioner Brian Paddick at the Met Police's awards as volunteer of the year.

He said: "I'm sad to be leaving, but I'm nearly 80, I have really enjoyed the role.

"We don't have any trouble at all, we're civilians, and because of that people don't get so antagonistic, sometimes when they see a uniform they get all uppity, that's the main advantage of the volunteers."
