Leisure centre staff waved goodbye to 80 years of history as a swimming pool closed its doors for the last time .

Employees at Heston Pool were joined by Hounslow Council leader Jagdish Sharma and his deputy Colin Ellar for a farewell ceremony last Friday (February 14).

It was a particularly poignant day for centre manager Gill Wrightson, who began working at the centre 38 years ago as a lifeguard.

The 1930s building will now be demolished to make way for a new leisure centre, scheduled to open in November 2015.

Mr Ellar said: "It's sad to see the pool close after all these years of serving the local community, but the fact is, it's no longer fit for purpose.

"The new centre will provide a wider range of modern facilities, and give users a centre they can be proud of."

The new £13.5 million centre was approved by councillors in December.
