Graceful, elegant and thin, that’s Pongo –many people would like to be described in those terms.

But they might be less keen on the other trappings associated with being a racing greyhound.

Pongo’s just one of many ex- racing greyhounds currently waiting, in a rehoming centre, for a new home.

The welfare of racing greyhounds has become such a cause for concern that it is, this week, being discussed in Parliament.

Greyhounds cost animal charities more than any other breed/crossbreed.

In addition their stay in kennels is longer than any other dogs. So say the Welfare members of the Greyhound Forum, which includes charities such as Dogs Trust and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

It’s not surprising, then, that when MP's announced an inquiry into the welfare of greyhounds, they received an overwhelming response from animal charities.

Concerns include that current regulations do not adequately protect the racing greyhound, what happens to dogs bred for racing but not considered good enough and what happens to injured and retired dogs.

We know what’s happened to Pongo. Fortunately for him, this four year old, ex-racer came into the care of Dogs Trust in Scotland who sent him down to Dogs Trust London to seek his fortune.

He’s a lovely affectionate boy who came straight over to see me when I met him in the courtyard.

Having been used to spending his life in kennels, he is looking for owners who will help him adapt to life in a home.

He seems to be getting the hang of it. Shortly after meeting him in the courtyard, I saw him in his kennel, curled up asleep in his comfy bed – as though he was in the lap of luxury.

He can live with children aged 8 or above. If you could home this delightful boy, you can meet him at Dogs Trust, Harvil Rd, Harefield.
