CAMERAS in Harrow Weald helped police to arrest people suspected of conning an elderly man at a cash machine.

Police raided homes in Stratford and Ilford, Essex, last week, arresting two men and a woman on suspicion of theft.

Beforehand, officers had seen footage recorded by cameras at the machine outside Waitrose, in High Road. They watched as the incident on March 19 unfolded on screen.

Two men approached an elderly man who was using the machine, waited as he typed in his PIN code and then appeared to distract him.

One man then allegedly stole the cash card as the other talked to the elderly man. Later that day, almost £800 was removed from his bank account.

Police also checked footage from Harrow Council's CCTV, which enabled them to identify two men and to make out the registration number of a car, which led them to the addresses in Ilford and Stratford.

The three people who were arrested last week have been released on police bail until the end of May.
