Police have closed an investigation into a suspected gang shooting in Hounslow due to a lack of evidence.

An 18-year-old man was arrested in Harlington on October 12 following reports of shots being fired in Edgar Road, just south of Hounslow Heath, in the early hours of that morning.

But police this week said the investigation had been closed and no further action would be taken against the teenager, who was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Neighbours on the estate, which is on the border of Hounslow and Hanworth, but falls just within the borough of Richmond, told at the time how they believed the shooting - in which no one is believed to have been injured - had taken place outside a girl's 16th birthday party.

A police spokeswoman today said: "The matter was fully investigated. However, due to insufficient evidence the investigation has been closed. Any new or further evidence which comes to light will be re-examined and investigated fully."

The suspected shooting, reported to have taken place near the community centre on the Hounslow Heath estate and across the road from a children's play area, was investigated by officers from the Met's Trident Gang Crime Command unit.
