Police have confirmed they were called to a large group of what appeared to be Romanian gypsies on Harefield village green around 1.30pm yesterday (Thursday, June 12).

However, they say there was 'absolutely no trouble' and the group was having a picnic while waiting to visit a relative at Harefield Hospital in Hill End Road.

It is unclear why the police was called.

Social media was awash with people talking about the arrival, and questioning what they were doing there.

Stuart Birdsall, who lives in Harefield, posted on Twitter last night: "Any news why a coach dropped Romanian gypsies off at harefield this morning? they seem to have settled down on the common"

"Tensions brewing in the village over the Romanian gypsies 3 riot vans at the scene, leave now ur not wanted"

"Locals not happy round here with them, like an invasion of the village green!"

A 'Mr Hooper' tweeted: "Romanian I think ? 50 or 60 about 5ish all on the green!"

Another eyewitness said she saw 'a large group of Romany women sitting down and another group of males all gathered too' at around 7.30pm last night. She estimates there were around 30 of them.

It is believed they left last night just after 8pm.
