HOWdo we know a general election is in the offing? Prime Minister Gordon Brown visits a 'nice' area with a high non-white population and promises to be tough on immigration (news report, November 13).
Labour has had more than a decade to sort out illegal immigration, to limit legal immigrants and to shore up our borders. All it has done is to change the name of the overwhelmed and often ineffectual staff at our porous borders, whether they be sea or air ports. Brown denied us the promised referendum on the now-signed Lisbon Treaty and has therefore given away the last of our sovereignty.
Yet he all he is doing is playing around with his latest wheeze - his points system. He is not sending back the thousands of overstaying students, failed asylum seekers and those who came here totally illegally. Soon, no doubt, there will an amnesty for them all, as more land is concreted over and more local facilities buckle under the everincreasing population. Schools all over London are suffering from greater intakes of new pupils.
He waffles on about the UK being 'a country of diversity and yet solidarity', yet his party has given Scotland its own parliament and Wales its own assembly, while giving England no means of governing itself. He has certainly created diversity, but has destabilised what was once the richest country in the world.
His words seldom match his actions, but that has been Labour all along since 1997. Maybe next year, he and his fine words will be history.
