I am writing on the subject of the proposed timber classroom that we at St Mary's require to cope with our expanding Junior Church.

I can only hope that your correspondent (R C Roe - Letters, January 9) has been misquoted in the assertion that 'the children won't be disabled'.

On what information is this based, and how does Mr or Ms Roe presume to know the make-up of our present and future congregation? As a church we wish to make our buildings accessible to

the less-abled, and indeed are required to do so by the Disability Discrimination Act.

In fact one of our junior church helpers is disabled, and certainly could not manage access by a stairway.

Without full knowledge of the facts your correspondent should avoid using emotive language such as 'desecration', that carries implications of wanton defacement. The sole gravestone affected by the new building will be carefully moved and placed elsewhere in the churchyard (which incidentally

has been closed to new burials since the 1880s). No human remains will be disturbed.

Your correspondent is most welcome to visit the church at any time. We are always willing to accept offers of help with our children and youth work, which is so vital to the future of our church as a living entity. The support of families is more important than ever in these difficult times.
