Wealdstone High Street was at a standstill on Sunday (01) after a blaze ravaged a pizza parlour.

Five fire engines were sent to tackle the flames at Pizza on Demand at about 2pm after calls of a chip pan fire.

The fire is said to have damaged more than 40 per cent of the ground floor and ruined parts of the takeaways' ventilation system.

The High Street was closed for more than an hour, between Locket Road and Spencer Road, while teams from fire brigades across Harrow fought the blaze.

Michael Sutton was walking to his home in Locket Road when he saw firemen tackling the flames.

The 46-year-old said: "There was so much smoke coming from the shop, I've never seen anything like it. It seemed like there was a fair bit of damage to the pizza place but fortunately it seems that no one was injured."

A spokesman from Harrow Fire Brigade said: "We received multiple calls from residents about a fire in the High Street after it caused an awful lot of smoke.

"We requested traffic control and police to attend as a precaution and the road was closed for a short period of time."

He also confirmed there were no injuries.
