The long wait is finally over, and for these sprightly pensioners, it could not come soon enough.

The FIFA World Cup kicks off today (June 12), and residents in Anchor House in Arneway Street, Westminster, got into the spirit by waving St George's Cross flags.

Antonio Meloni is activities co-ordinator at the home and said: “The residents are very excited about the World Cup. They come from different countries so we will be watching all the matches every day on our big 50-inch TV. We're all looking forward to it.”

England plays its first match of the tournament on Saturday night against Italy. Also in its group are Uruguay and Costa Rica.
