AN ARTISTIC schoolboy who draws wry images of cricket games has had his pictures compiled into a fundraising calendar.

Vaughan Primary School pupil Joe Molander became Harrow St Mary’s Cricket Club’s in-house cartoonist after the Middlesex County League club began lessons at his school in The Gardens, West Harrow, and invited pupils to its ground in Headstone Lane, Harrow.

The 12-year-old, who lives with his mother Helen Molander and father Richard Holmes in Oxford Road, North Harrow, said: “I probably started drawing, like anyone, on a cafe napkin and that sort of thing.

“I’m not really a sportsperson but my friend’s dad took us to the cricket club and he said there was a job as the club cartoonist going so I went with my sketchbook.

“I don’t have a clue about the world of cricket but I remember thinking the ball is made of wood and surely if it hit you, it would really hurt, so I based one picture on that.

“Another one was about the weather. It’s a British thing – we are very hard to put off when it comes to sports.”

Club secretary and coach at St Mary’s Cricket Club, Lesley Brown, said: “Our members have enjoyed his work so much that his cartoons have been displayed for everyone to see. We thought it would be a great fundraising idea to have a 2012 calendar made of his cartoons, which we have done and they are now being sold to our members and friends.

“Cricket isn’t just about what goes on out on the field; it’s a great social sport off it and Joe captures that in his cartoons.”

Joe, who said he is inspired by Matt Groening creator of TV’s The Simpsons cartoon, added: “It’s nice because I think of it as a job and it will look good on my CV.”
