Pupils at Chiswick School got into the spirit of freerunning during a visit from the founder, and actor who starred in James Bond's Casino Royale, Sébastien Foucan.

Today's (2) visit marked a commitment to expand the Foucan Freerunning Academy (FFA) into west London, at the school on Burlington Lane, which has been chosen as its base from January 2015.

Following a tour of the school facilities, Mr Foucan demonstrated some basic moves to a group of 20 students and encouraged them to have a go at some too.

Mr Foucan said: "It has always been my intention to open my academy and the opportunity really started when I did the Super Saturday of Sport in Chiswick.

"Chiswick school is a good opportunity at the right time when I needed it, also children are already there!

"The facilities are great and the headteacher, Tony Ryan really understands how free running can benefit his students and the wider Chiswick community."

He started the academy as a way to pass on his knowledge and philosophy of the sport, adding, "in this day and age, with Youtube - it easy for people to see and then want to copy what I do - but it is important that free running is practiced safely and responsibly in our environment."

It was people's passion for the sport at the free taster session at Chiswick’s Super Saturday of Sport in July which spurred on the academy's expansion.

Freerunning which is all about 'expressing yourself physically using your environment' provides a range of skills including coordination, strength, flexibility and confidence.

Headteacher, Tony Ryan said: “We are delighted to be part of this exciting expansion of the Foucan Freerunning Academy.

"Sébastien is the best in his field and that is our aspiration as a school, so to tie the two together is perfect synergy.

“We are attempting to provide extra curricular activities to fit every student, I am certain that this will appeal to Chiswick students and will further enhance our enrichment programme.”

Mr Foucan added: “I am really excited to be expanding my academy and Chiswick School feels like a natural home for it.

"The school strives to inspire its students to excel through activity, which matches with the goals of the Foucan Freerunning Academy (FFA)."

Chiswick School will host after-hours FFA sessions for beginners and improver freerunners aged 12 and up, every Tuesday, from January 6, 2015.

It is open to everyone and will be held in addition to the current classes in north London.
