'Our fight is far from over' is the message coming today from anti-HS2 campaigners in Hillingdon.

Last night the Hybrid Bill for HS2 passed second reading stage in Parliament after a majority of MPs voted it through.

Anti-HS2 campaigners from the borough took part in a demonstration outside the Houses of Parliament ahead of the debate.

Now people across the borough have the chance to petition and negotiate with a parliamentary committee for the best possible mitigation from the rail project and to make changes to the plan that will give relief to the communities most affected, in Ickenham, Harefield and Ruislip.

Ruislip Against HS2 chairman Lottie Jones said: "Our fight is far from over.

"We still believe changes can happen, not least with the coming election but also not forgetting there is yet to be a third reading before HS2 is set in stone."

Uxbridge and South Ruislip Conservative MP John Randall, who was one of 34 rebel MPs who went against their parties and voted no to the Hybrid Bill , had joined demonstrators earlier in the day.

Mrs Jones said: "We are heartened by the many MPs who have stood up for what they believe to be right and voted against HS2.

"Local residents in Ruislip are very grateful that Sir John Randall MP has now been able to speak out and represent his constituents."

But she added: "Many are disappointed that Nick Hurd MP was unable to do the same for Ickenham and Harefield."

The Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner MP chose to abstain from voting, saying instead: "I would rather pour my energy into using whatever influence I have to pursue the key campaigns."
