DESPITE assurances Ealing cinema will be built after work started to create a temporary car park on site, a campaign group is still pushing for greater clarity over the project.

The Save Ealing Cinema on-line petition has already received 800 signatories in only a week and is calling for the £20million development to be built as soon as possible.

Campaigners are angered they were not informed over the creation of a temporary car park and want to know exactly when the cinema will be built.

Kuldeep Brar, 36, of Haven Green, said: "Although work started last week, it was for the car park and not the cinema. We want Empire Cinema to be clear about exactly what they are doing, how long will the car park be in use and when will they get round to building the cinema - we and the community expect a cinema.

"We feel like we're being robbed. Ealing is a lasting legacy of the film industry but it's tragic that we will not be able to watch the films being made in the borough on the big screen in Ealing.

"A lot of people are relying on the cinema for the regeneration of the town centre and it's important not to underestimate the importance of community places that bring energy and focus.

"The cinema was in a state of disrepair in the last few years and we saw it crumble but this is the final insult. We have been patient but we won't be quiet about this and will press on with the petition."
