POPSTAR Peter Andre and Mayor of London Boris Johnson were mobbed by mums on a visit to Shepherd's Bush Library.

The pair were launching a campaign to recruit 2,000 'Library Champions' to volunteer at libraries across the capital and help set up reading groups.

Toddlers were read stories by the musician and politician and both were impressed with the £2m Wood Lane library, paid for by Westfield Shopping Centre, and opened in 2009.

The Mysterious Girl singer told Chronicle: “Libraries have definitely changed from when I was a kid and they look a lot more social.

“It used to be dry and I remember being terrified of coming to libraries but now you can bring your lap-top and DVDs and it is a opening it up for a new generation.”

“As always it is a joy to be here to see the fantastic services that the borough supports,” added Mr Johnson. “No-one can say London's libraries aren't popular because there were so many people in there.

“This library is providing all sorts of invaluable services and it is an oasis of calm where people can read and improve their skills.”

The Team London Love Libraries scheme will see volunteers help people of all ages with reading and helping people get online and apply for jobs or improve their education.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council are among the first in the capital to apply for a share of the £100,000 funding pot for the project.

Mr Johnson said: “We want to get 2,000 champions across London and am delighted Hammersmith and Fulham are leading the way.”

“Talking as a parent I believe it helps bond parents and children,” added Mr Andre. “People think it is about the kids reading themselves but it is about you reading to them which is important.”
