A pensioner has died after a blaze at a sheltered accommodation for the elderly.

The 70-year-old man was rescued by firefighters from Gillian House, Elms Road, Harrow Weald, and taken to Northwick

Park Hospital, in Watford Road, where he later died. The flats, which are owned by Harrow Churches Housing Association (HCHA), were evacuated and 35 pensioners had to leave their homes on Saturday night.

The association could face prosecution under fire safety laws as the fire brigade investigates the blaze.

Four fire engines were called at 9.20pm and battled the flames for more than an hour. The fire started in a first-floor flat, which was badly damaged.

Five ambulances were called to the scene to check over residents.

The firefighters left at about 3am after making the block safe and the pensioners have since returned to their flats.

Chief executive of HCHA Christopher Holley said: "We would like to thank the London Fire Brigade, and the other emergency services who acted promptly and professionally.

"All HCHA staff were on the scene quickly and all our procedures worked well."

He added that staff had offered condolences to the family of the man who died.
