THIRTY schools will close tomorrow as teachers join other public sector workers in nationwide strikes

Thousands of workers are protesting against changes to the pension scheme which will see them work longer and have to pay more into the pot.

The day of industrial action looks set to impact on Hammersmith and Fulham with only eight schools able to stay open.

A protest rally will take place outside Hammersmith and Fulham Council town hall, in King Street, from 11.15am and other pickets are expected throughout the borough.

The council will also be affected but it remains hopeful of minimising the disruption caused to people across the borough.

A council spokeswoman said: “We are working hard to minimise service disruptions to residents locally. Bin collections and street sweeping are expected to be operating as normal as are the majority of council services - although some schools and libraries may be forced to close.

“Parents are advised to call their child's school direct if they are concerned about possible closure. The council is working with the unions to keep services like meals on wheels, emergency housing works and Careline open.”

Imperial College NHS Trust, which runs Charing Cross, Hammersmith and Queen Charlotte's & Chelsea Hospitals, has been forced to reschedule some patient operations as its workers also join the strike.

A statement said: “The trust will run as many services as possible. However, we envisage that a proportion of elective procedures will be rescheduled.

“We have been working in partnership with our unions to ensure we can protect patient safety and minimise disruption to clinical services.”
