Brothers-in-law who have run a Brentford newsgaents for nearly 30 years were given a good send-off by their loyal customers.

Narendra and Jayesh Patel retired last Friday (October 17) from Patel Newsagents, in Clayponds Lane, where they took over in 1985.

Loyal customers of the duo, who are both 59 and live in Southall, threw them a farewell party at The Old Fire Station in Brentford High Street on Sunday (October 19).

There's no need to change the name of the shop, as it will now be run by the pair's good friends Jalpesh and Taral Patel. They continue a tradition of Patels at the outlet, which was run before 1985 by Vinesh Patel.

Jayesh and Narendra Patel, who have retired after 29 years running the same shop

Narendra, who like Jayesh grew up in Gujarat, India, said he was retiring due to ill health but customers had not seen the last of him.

"I worked from 6am every day and never had a day off but I've had problems with my legs and lungs and it's time to call it a day," he told getwestlondon.

"This is my home. The people of Brentford are like my second family. Everyone looks after one another. When I've been ill in the past our customers would go and buy medicine for me.

"I'm still going to come to Brentford a lot to see my old customers because I will miss them too much."

After arriving in the UK in the late 70s, Narendra worked long hours at a plastic factory in New Malden, while his brother-in-law, who has two grandchildren, toiled away at the Nestle factory in Hayes to raise the money to buy the shop.

Narendra said there had only been one break-in at the shop during their 29 years there, and that happened five years after they took it over.

Such was the affection in which the pair were held by the community, street dance instructor Torron-Lee Dewar filmed the above video, which has been a hit on YouTube, so customers would have something by which to remember them.
