SUNDAY shoppers in Uxbridge are unhappy with unfair parking charges in the town centre.

The Chimes shopping centre charges a minimum fee of £2 to park on Sundays, and Cedars car park also charges the same.

Sue Turner, 49, an executive assistant from Drayton Gardens, was affected by the price hike when using Cedars car park last Sunday.

She said: "Prices have gone up from one to two pounds and we had to pay it, even though we were only going to be 15 minutes.

"Other people who were feeding the ticket machine were complaining to each other, so it wasn't just me who wasn't happy about being ripped off.

"I've just viewed The Chimes website and the same charges apply there, so I won't come here again on a Sunday - if I do I'll park in the road. We wondered why we saw so many people parked in the streets, but we know now."

This could spell concern for local residents, who may find their streets full of shoppers hoping to save money.

A resident of Hows Road, who did not want to be named, said: "We do get a lot of shoppers parked here, but only on Sundays. It's a recent thing, people do it because they can get away without buying a ticket."

Tony Dunn, general manager of The Chimes shopping centre, said: "The Chimes car park is a designated shoppers' car park, and as such we believe the Sunday tariff at £2 affords good value and the time to shop through the whole day whilst enjoying all the retail, leisure and dining facilities.

"In addition, from our research we believe our parking charges are in line with the competition in close proximity to the centre."
