Cosy book corners with cushions and hideaways have been created in classrooms to add some magic to reading.

Wendell Park Primary School in Shepherd’s Bush contributed £8,500 from its improvement plan budget and the Friends of Wendell Park parents’ association raised £6,000 to create the reading spaces in each of the 17 classrooms.

Each class was given £500 to buy new books for the dedicated reading areas which were unveiled after World Book Day last week.

Headteacher Sheila Mears said: “We wanted to make the book corners different, interesting and stimulating to encourage children to read for enjoyment, to enable our pupils to read well and develop that love of reading. The children have been very excited by the book corners.”

The school has also launched a Big Read initiative to encourage reading for fun outside lessons.
