These pictures show the dangers school children face every time they try and cross busy Shepherd's Bush Road.

The images were captured by a concerned parent, who says the lack of pedestrian crossings on the thoroughfare are putting lives in danger.

Nearly 60 people have already signed a petition to Hammersmith and Fulham Council to demand work to build a new puffin crossing at the junction of Blythe Road is completed quickly.

Hundreds of children from nearby schools, including Addison Primary, cross the road everyday. Parents say problems began when traffic lights were removed from the junction with Netherwood Road. Later lights were also scrapped at Blythe Road to make way for the proposed puffin crossing.

"At minimum one child has been injured at this particular crossing (Blythe Road) within the last few months," says the petition. "At least two school governing bodies have formally written with concerns about the crossing within the last few months.

"The crossing was scheduled to be replaced with a safer puffin crossing before school resumed for the year 2011-2012, however the work has not yet been completed.

"This leaves a long stretch of a busy road open to speeding traffic. There are two major primary schools within a very short distance, and almost 10 schools within a kilometre. It is a neighbourly area with many pedestrians. No interim safety measures have been taken to ensure the safety of pedestrians or the many children taking this route to school."

The council says residents backed the changes in a consultation last year. Nick Botterill, deputy leader and cabinet member for environment, said: "Residents were consulted on the future of the two signalised pedestrian crossings on Shepherds Bush Road in July 2010. The proposals, which received local support, was to remove the pelican crossing at Netherwood Road and to upgrade the Blythe Road pelican crossing to a puffin crossing.

"TfL are currently undertaking the crossing upgrade and in the interim period the council has arranged for the local police safer neighbourhood team to provide crossing assistance for schoolchildren. When completed the new puffin crossing will offer an improved crossing facility for school children and other users wishing to cross Shepherds Bush Road."
