Two people were rescued after a sheltered housing flat went up in flames in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a man from a flat on the ground floor of the block in Redcliffe Square, West Brompton after being called at 4.33am today (January 14).

A woman was also escorted to safety from another flat within the block and the pair, along with four others were treated by the London Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation.

Twenty other people had left the block before the fire brigade arrived.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman, said: “Half of a three roomed flat on the ground floor was damaged by fire.

“Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers from Kensington, Chelsea, Fulham and Battersea fire stations and a turntable ladder from Soho attended the incident.

“The Brigade was called at 0433 and the fire was brought under control at 0530.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
