We were glad the Gazette was able to report on the issue of waste disposal and our concern about the possibility of new incinerators in West London.

While opposing incineration, for the reasons outlined in the article, we would just like to add that we are well aware that there are other means of generating energy from waste, some of which can be relatively clean and sustainable. One example is anaerobic digestion, which can be used to produce gas for fuel.

What is obvious is that the current rate of production of waste is completely unsustainable and wastes valuable resources. Even the recent improvements to recycling still leave around two thirds of London's domestic waste going to landfill. Greens want to see a single waste authority for London and a zero waste strategy adopted, to minimise waste and maximise recycling.
