A YOUNG man spotted coming out of bushes wielding an axe sparked a huge police operation at the weekend.
Six police units and a dog van were called to Gunnersbury Park on Saturday just before 4pm and carried out an extensive search of the area.
One witness said he was sitting in the café drinking his tea when he saw police come out of the police vans.
The dog walker said: "There were four policemen in the car and a dog van and they were obviously looking for something or someone.
"They were searching the area around the pond and orangery and I thought someone must have been attacked because of the large police presence."
A police spokesman said: "We were called at 3:50pm to reports of a man pulling an axe out of the bushes, which he hid under his T-shirt.
"Police carried out an extensive search of the area including the football pitch, rugby field, the surrounding streets and the housing estate opposite the park.
"It is possible the person who reported the incident made a mistake and the young man could have been using the axe to cut a tree. But under the suspicious circumstances we sent the police units to search the entire area and finished at approximately 4:15pm."
