Children's charity NSPCC are calling on people in west London to sign up to volunteer deliver a new project to primary schools in Hounslow.

In a bid to combat abuse and neglect, suffered by on average two children in every primary school classroom, the organisation has launched Childline Schools Service for primary school children.

The West London Service Centre at Swan House in Hanworth needs volunteers (aged 16 and over) to help reach all nine to 11-year-olds in the 54 schools in Hounslow.

The project will see volunteers visit schools during assembly or deliver a workshop during school hours to help young people understand what abuse is, how to protect themselves and how to get help.

The move comes after NSPCC research revealed children weren't telling anyone what's happening to them until they are much older due to fear and lack of information.

ChildLine area coordinator for West London, Ria Charlton, said: “By talking to children in an age-appropriate way we hope to achieve a massive reduction in child abuse by preventing it before it starts.

"But we can’t do it on our own – we need more people from Hounslow to volunteer to go into schools and help us to protect even more children."

Volunteers need to dedicate two days a month to the cause and visits are carried out on weekdays between 9am and 3.30pm, during term time.

Raj Bhatowa, 49, who has been a ChildLine Schools Service volunteer for the past two years, said: “The Childline Schools Service is vital in raising awareness of not only who we are but also raises awareness of other support for children within their own schools, at home and the wider community, children gain an understanding of child abuse in a variety of forms and in an age appropriate and engaging way.

“Volunteering is a hugely satisfying feeling, knowing that you could have made a difference in a child's life, and been part of their journey and steps to a happier future."

A one year commitment is required and volunteers will receive full training and support.
