Carnival may have only finished less than 12 hours ago but hard-working cleaners have already managed to clear up the streets.

Street cleaners and refuge collectors stepped right up last night as they braved the elements to clear up after Europe’s biggest street party .

Early estimates by Kensington and Chelsea Council reveal that close to 200 tonnes have already been removed from the streets of Notting Hill and North Kensington over the two days of Carnival.

Cleaners had to wait for police to give the go-ahead last night before a team of 200 street cleaners with 30 refuse trucks, mechanical street cleaners and a specialised motorway cleaning vehicle moved onto the streets after thousands of festival-goers left.

The efficient cleaners managed to get the streets back to normal by 5am today (August 26) and are now tackling the big clean-up of people’s gardens and basement areas which unfortunately get the brunt of (mainly men) relieving themselves.

This should carry on over several days and the council will continue to patrol the Carnival area for the coming days to check nothing has been missed.

Nick Paget Brown, leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, said: “Cleaning up after Europe’s biggest street party is an enormous undertaking which we try to complete as quickly as possible. I would like to thank everyone who worked through the night to get the job down and of course our residents for their patience.”
